Summertime Hearths: Chimineas and Firepits

Fireplaces are popular at home and social gatherings, but the the end of the heating season doesn't mean you can't enjoy the allure of a flickering fire. There are many fireplace options for your garden, deck or patio, or even on the beach, to extend your outdoor hours or to add ambience to a summer evening.

Firepits: The firepit is the original outdoor fireplace. Used from ancient times to contain a fire and prevent it from spreading out of control, a firepit can be as simple as a hollow place dug in the ground and ringed by rocks. Popularized again by the reality show "Survivor," modern firepits are available in many styles from classic to dramatic, can be permanent or portable, and can be gas as well as wood fueled. For the adventurous do-it-yourselfer, firepits can be home-built to suit your needs.

Chimineas: The chiminea has some advantages over the open firepit. Chimineas have a round, semi-enclosed fire chamber topped with a tall chimney that provides draft for the fire. Because it has a chimney, the chiminea is easier to light and burns more efficiently, providing a lot of heat.

Originating in Mexico, chimineas were first made of clay and used wood for fuel. Now they are available in other materials, including cast iron and aluminum, and can even be fitted for natural gas or propane. For lightweight durability and ease of care, cast aluminum is a good choice. Chimineas are typically adorned with beautiful relief designs, and add a charming decorative element to the garden or deck. Choose the size and style you like best!

Think safety first! No matter what type of outdoor fireplace you choose, be sure to:

  • check local codes and ordinances
  • have a professional install any necessary gas lines
  • keep a fire extinguisher nearby

so you can continue to enjoy your firepit or chiminea for a long time to come!
