What is Zone Heating?

Heating a home can be very expensive, especially if it is a larger home and located in a cold climate with harsh winters. Standard heating systems are designed to heat the entire home evenly. Heating rooms that you do not use often can really drive up your monthly heating bills. Zone heating allows you to have much more control of what rooms are warmer and to ensure the rooms that are actively being used are to the temperature you desire. Zone heating can be done on a room to room and level to level basis, depending on home much space actually gets used regularly.

How do I benefit from zone heating?

This answer is simple. Cost Savings. Zone heating can reduce your heating cost by up to 30%. Having the ability to control when and which rooms are heated will prevent waste and put more money in your pocket. With the large increases we have been seeing with the gas prices, turning off the heat in a few rooms you do not use very often and heating them when you choose will save you in the long run.

How can I implement zone heating in my home?

Wood Burning Stove

Installing a wood burning stove is a great addition for implementing zone heating in a home. Wood stoves are a great appliance for heating large rooms very quickly. For larger spaces, a wood stove would be the best option for a zone heating appliance. Wood stoves have an average surface temperature of around 450 to 650 degrees Fahrenheit and they have the ability to get that temperature very quickly. The radiant heat and slow thermal release from a wood stove can also keep the space warm for much longer than any other type of heating appliance. Wood burning stoves come in a variety of sizes to heat spaces as small as 250 square feet up to 2700 square feet. This makes a wood stove the perfect choice no matter how large or small of a space you are trying to heat.

Direct Vent Gas Stove

Direct Vent Gas Stoves and fireplaces are also a great appliance to install for zone heating. A gas stove or fireplace would be best used to heat medium size rooms and bring the conveniences of ease of use compared to a wood burning stove. Simply turn on the gas stove with a press of a button and instantly start heating the space. Gas stoves and fireplaces are also extremely convenient in a basement setting where wood stoves tend to struggle due to the negative pressure. Basements are often always colder and the home heating system is rarely brought down to the basement to the extent of an upstairs. Installing a gas stove for zone heating in a basement is the best way to heat the space without having to make considerable changes to the home heating system. Gas stoves are also similar to a vent, which allows them to be located in more places in a home as opposed to a wood stove which needs a very direct path. Gas fireplaces and stoves range from producing 20,000 to 50,000 BTUs, which makes them a great space heater. If you are looking to heat a medium size room, a gas stove or fireplace is a great choice.

Electric Fireplace

Electric fireplaces are becoming more and more popular for zone heating. The electric fireplace is best used to heat small spaces that do not frequently get used such as a guest room or a home office. The easy installation makes electric fireplaces an attractive option. Simply hang on the wall and plug in the fireplace and you are constantly producing heat. The beautiful flame effects make for a realistic fire that will provide great ambience to the room. Electric fireplaces range from 5,000 to 10,000 BTUs which make them good room heaters. An electric fireplace is not going to heat your home. However, if you have a few rooms you seldomly use and would like to have on demand heat, an electric fireplace is for you.
