Winterize Your Chimney

Before the snow gets too deep... be sure to get your chimney ready for winter!

At the beginning of the heating season it's a good idea to clean and inspect your chimney, or have it cleaned and inspected professionally. Do this now if you haven't done it already. Make sure there are no obstructions, leaves, bird or animal nests, or other debris blocking the flue. Excess creosote buildup can lead to chimney fires and should be removed.

Of course, when doing any work on the roof, you should always follow proper safety precautions and be sure to check for and avoid overhead power lines. Inspect the top of the chimney, chimney cap, flashings and other connections to make sure they are solid. If you don't have a chimney cap, consider getting one: it will keep critters, leaves and rain out of your flue. Clear the roof of leaves and trim away overhanging branches.

Also check the chimney liner carefully for any cracks or damage. If the inspection reveals any damage to the liner, play it safe and reline your chimney before building another fire. You don't want carbon dioxide or sparks coming in through the cracks.

Sweep out and clean your fireplace, too. If you have a wood or pellet stove, inspect it for cracks or damage and make sure all the parts are in good working order. Take care of any necessary repairs.

Make sure your firewood is dry and ready to burn. Resist the temptation to burn boxes, gift wrap and other trash in your fireplace or stove - this is not safe and could start a chimney fire.

Then you can enjoy the winter curled up in front of your cozy fire!
