Help & Documents

The Lock Top II Chimney Damper With Cap is the perfect solution for cold & drafty wood burning fireplaces. There's no question, old traditional metal fireplace throat dampers tend to be very leaky even when the damper is closed.

Save money by installing the Lock Top Chimney Damper. As a matter of fact, a traditional masonry fireplace throat damper will leak $200 or more of energy a year. However, the Lock Top II Chimney Damper is equipped with a silicone gasket under the lid which makes for an extremely tight seal when closed. After installation, you will no longer feel a draft when the fireplace is not being used.

Features

Not only will this damper prevent downdrafts and energy loss, it is also equipped with a single flue chimney cap with 3/4" spark arrestor to prevent sparks from exiting the chimney while also providing weather protection. The cap will also prevent critters from entering the chimney if you forget to close the damper after you have had a fire. The cap is removable from the damper for cleaning and maintenance.

A Sweep's Ring is included with the Lock Top II Damper Cap. Specifically, the Sweep's Ring allows you to fully remove the damper without having to cut the adhesive that holds the damper to the flue. The Sweep's Ring Gasket will attach to the flue with the included adhesive.  Lastly, the damper will bolt to the Sweep's Ring gasket.

Moreover, the Lock Top II Chimney Damper includes 30 ft. cable, adhesive, mounting hardware, and a Lifetime Warranty. The heavy duty stainless steel cable withstands extreme temperatures, it will not burn out. The base is constructed of heavy duty cast aluminum and the lid from stainless steel.

Overall, the hardware you will need to install the Lock Top II Damper is included. For that reason, the only tools you will need to install the damper are a pair of wire cutters, drill, 1/4" masonry drill bit, and a hammer.

  • Removable lid
  • 3/4" spark arrestor
  • 30 ft. stainless steel cable
  • Mounting hardware
  • Sweep's Ring
  • Adhesive
  • Lifetime Warranty

Operating Your Lock Top Chimney Damper

Firstly, mount the Lock Top II Chimney Damper on the top of your chimney flue. Secondly, adjust the chain handle to the bracket you mount on the fireplace wall. Lastly, lock the cable in the fireplace bracket when you want to close the damper and release the cable from the bracket to allow the damper to spring open when you are ready to have a fire.

Most important, this is intended for use with traditional masonry wood burning fireplaces. In addition, do not use with gas appliances or gas logs.

Note: Do not use Lock-Top II dampers with gas logs (failure to open the damper for gas burning appliances could result in carbon monoxide to back up in the home. Also, in the event of a gas leak, could result in gas being trapped in the chimney which could result in an explosion.)

Options for Your Lock Top Chimney Damper

RS Round Flue Adapter (Optional):

Although Lock-Top Dampers are typically installed to your square or rectangle flue, many chimney flues have round clay tiles, pipes, or solid packed Class A double wall pipes. We now have a solution for them with the RS round flue adapter.

Firstly, use the RS Round Adapter by simply sliding it inside the round flue opening. Secondly, you will attach the energy-saving Lock-Top damper to the square (top) of the RS adapter.

RS Round Flue Adapter Sizing:

To begin with, select the RS Adapter by the inside diameter of the flue or pipe opening. Another key point, the RS adapters are NOT to be used with Air Cooled Pipes. If you need an Air Cooled Adapter, please contact us for a quote.

Nevertheless, give us a call if you would like help sizing for a RS Adapter.

Great DIY

I originally was going to contract a local chimney sweep to install the chimney damper but after watching the DIY video, I decided to tackle it myself. Everything went smoothly and I couldn’t be happier with the damper or the installation. If I may offer a few suggestions for an update of the DIY video. 1. Don’t put the adhesive on the chimney stack till after the cable has been dropped down the chimney and made sure that it made it to the fireplace. 2. Drill holes into the fireplace brick itself rather than into the mortar for the cable hangar. 3. In order to adjust the length of the cable pull (step 5 of the included instructions), I loosened the brass adjustment clamp and slid it up the cable after In pulled the cable to close the damper. I then took vice grips and clamped them below the brass adjustment clamp so I could tighten the screw in the clamp by myself. Then I cut the excess cable. Overall, I’m very pleased with the damper.

Great for real winter

Internal damper rusted out in cold, snowy country. This one seals the drafts much better and survived the deep snow. Keeps the birds out, too.

Awesome product

Solved a problem I had with an internal damper rusting out like swiss cheese. This thing installed on the chimney in minutes and then another 20 minutes to install the pull cable. I recommend this to anyone. The nice part is, it comes with the clean ring so I can unbolt it and take it off for chimney cleaning.
