How To Order a DuraVent DuraTech Class A Cathedral Ceiling Kit

Dura-Vent DuraTech Class A chimney pipe is a great option for venting a wood burning stove when a masonry chimney is not available. One of the easiest and most cost effective chimney systems for a wood stove installation is having the pipe go through a cathedral/pitched ceiling and through the roof. Several factors must be considered when choosing the correct DuraTech parts for your chimney system.

Starting with the Stove

When planning a DuraTech Class A chimney system installation, it is best to have the stove in a set place. Double check the stove manufacturer's installation manual to ensure you maintain all necessary clearances from combustible materials when placing the stove. If at all possible, set the stove directly between the pitched ceiling joists to avoid any offsets in the pipe. We understand that is not always possible in every home.
Once the stove is in place measure from the top of the stove for top-exhaust wood stoves, or from the center of the exhaust hole for rear-exhaust wood stoves, to the bottom of the pitched ceiling. This will tell you the length of the single wall or double wall stove pipe you'll need to connect the stove to the Ceiling Support Box.

Extending the Cathedral Ceiling Support Box

Two variables determine how far the DuraTech Class A Ceiling Support Box needs to extend below a cathedral ceiling to ensure proper clearance from combustible material. First, decide between single wall and double wall black stove pipe to connect the stove to the Ceiling Support Box. Next, measure the pitch of the ceiling. If you plan to use single wall black stove pipe and the ceiling pitch is steep, the Ceiling Support Box must extend further below the ceiling. If you plan to use double wall black stove pipe, the Ceiling Support Box will not have to extend as far below the ceiling. Calculate how far the Ceiling Box will need to extend below the ceiling with this Calculation Guide.

Passing Through The Roof

Now we are ready to pass DuraTech Class A chimney pipe through the roof. Nothing needs to be done on the underside of the roof. You will just need the roof flashing and storm collar to waterproof the roof penetration. DuraTech offers a roof flashing for nearly any roof. You will need to know the roof material and the roof pitch to choose the correct style and pitch. For normal asphalt shingle roofs, The DuraTech Roof Flashing is the perfect choice. You will also need a DuraTech Storm Collar to seal around the DuraTech chimney pipe where it passes through the flashing. For metal roofs, we offer the DuraTech Rubber Boot Flashing

How Much Total DuraTech Class A Chimney Pipe Do I Need?

You will measure from the bottom of the Ceiling Support Box to the top of the roof deck. Then, you are able apply the 3-2-10 rule to determine how much additional pipe is necessary to be code compliant above the roof. (3-2-10 rule explained)Combine the total length of pipe needed from the Ceiling Support Box to the roof deck and add the height required by the 3-2-10 rule to determine the total chimney pipe needed.

Keep in mind that if you need more than 5' of pipe above the roof, you will need the DuraTech Extended Roof Bracket to stabilize the pipe above the roof. The last part of any DuraTech Class A chimney pipe installation is the DuraTech Class A Rain Cap to protect the new pipe from rain entering the chimney.  An optional DuraTech Spark Arrestor is available for when local building codes require a spark arrestor.
