How To Order a DuraVent DuraTech Class A Wall Pass Thru Kit

DuraVent DuraTech Class A chimney pipe is a great option for venting a woodburning stove when a masonry chimney is not available. A through-the-wall chimney system is a great option when a wood stove is positioned on an exterior wall of the home. Several factors must be considered when choosing the correct DuraTech parts for your chimney system. 

When planning a DuraTech Class A chimney system installation, stove placement is an important consideration. Double check the stove manual to ensure you maintain all necessary clearances from combustible materials when placing the stove. Once the stove is in place, find the location on the wall where the pipe will pass through it. Keep in mind that using more vertical pipe inside the home will reduce the amount of DuraTech Class A chimney pipe used outside. This will help cut costs and provide draft benefits for the stove. 

For the stove pipe inside the room, single and double wall black stove pipes are available. Typically, single wall stove pipes require an 18" clearance from combustible materials while double wall stove pipe has a 6" clearance to walls and 8" clearance to ceilings. Measure down from the ceiling based on the clearance of the stove pipe you are using; this will determine the best location for the pipe to pass through the wall. With the stove and wall penetration marked, you can measure for the black stove pipe. 

Before the stove pipe reaches the wall, you must transition from the stove pipe to the Class A chimney pipe before the pipe passes through the wall. You will need to use the DuraTech Class A Finish Collar to make the transition from the stove pipe to the Class A chimney pipe. 

Next, to allow for the Class A pipe to safely pass through a combustible wall, you will install the DuraTech Class A Wall Thimble. The DuraTech Wall Thimble consists of an interior and exterior firestop that connect together inside the wall. The Thimble can accommodate a wall thickness between 4" and 10". The wall thickness will also factor into the length of DuraTech Class A chimney pipe that must pass through it. Keep in mind that the DuraTech Class A chimney pipe requires a 2" clearance from combustible material. Also note, that the Class A pipe must extend into the living space by at least 6". 

On the exterior, you will need to account for at least an additional 2" of horizontal pipe through the wall so that the Tee Connection that turns the pipe vertically maintains the minimum clearance from combustible material. If you need to extend the pipe past a long roof overhang, you must also account for the proper length of horizontal pipe passing through the wall.

Now that the DuraTech Class A chimney pipe is outside, use the DuraTech Tee Connection to turn the pipe vertically to run up the side of the home. The Tee is supported by the DuraTech Class A Tee Support which mounts to the side of the home and clamps around the pipe supporting the weight of the heavy insulated pipe. The Tee Support is UL listed to support up to 70' of vertical chimney pipe. 

The Tee Connection is equipped with a removable Tee Cap to easily clean out the pipe after sweeping. The top of the tee will be able to accept the DuraTech chimney pipe to run up the side of the home and above the roof. Keep in mind, every 8' above the tee support running up the side of the home will require a DuraTech Class A Wall Strap for stabilization. 

The top of the DuraTech Class A chimney pipe will be approximately 6" above the center point of the wall penetration. You can measure from the center point of the wall penetration up to the roof overhang and then apply the 3-2-10 rule to determine how much additional pipe is necessary to be code compliant above the roof (3-2-10 rule explained) 

Then, you can combine the total length of pipe needed from the wall penetration and add the height required by the 3-2-10 rule to determine the total chimney pipe needed. Keep in mind that if you need more than 5' of pipe above the roof, you will need the DuraTech Extended Roof Bracket to stabilize the pipe above the roof. The last part of any DuraTech Class A chimney pipe installation is the DuraTech Class A Rain Cap to protect the new pipe from rain entering the chimney.  An optional DuraTech Spark Arrestor is available for when local building codes require a spark arrestor.
